Looking for fresh air, breathtaking landscapes and easily accessible trails?

The Basque Country is full of hiking paths and spectacular viewpoints  and the good news is that you ca reach many of them without a car! Thanks to the TXIK TXAK network, set off to explore these natural treasures freely, whether you’re an occasional walker or a true lover of the great outdoors.

Day hikes

Here are a few ideas for hikes you can reach by bus — to get away, stretch your legs and breathe!

Loop around Lake Xoldokogaina from the Ibardin Pass

Take line  4  from Saint-Jean-de-Luz. At the top of the pass, enjoy an easy 2-hour loop around the lake and its stone circles. Perfect for an accessible nature outing.

Crossing the Chapeau de Gendarme from Licq-Atherey

Take line 41 to Tardets, then line   to Licq to enjoy a 360° panorama from the summit.

The Mondarrain from Itxassou
Accessible via lines 40 + 28. A 4-hour family hike among pottoks and rocky outcrops, with stunning views at the top.

La Rhune nature mode, no car needed

Want to discover one of the Basque Country’s most iconic peaks without a car? It’s possible thanks to TXIK TXAK and the legendary Train de la Rhune!

Take line 44 from Bayonne or line 45 from Saint-Jean-de-Luz to reach the Col de Saint-Ignace in Sare, the train’s departure point. After just a few stops, you’ll arrive right at the foot of the station.

Once on board, let yourself be carried to the summit of La Rhune (905 m) and enjoy a breathtaking panorama over the Pyrenees, the Basque and Landes coastlines, and Navarre.

If you’re more athletic, you can also climb on foot from Ascain La Rhune – Larrun (Miramar) – – En Pays Basque  or from Sare following the GR10 trail. You may even spot wild pottoks and enjoy a unique experience in the heart of nature.

Smart access, spectacular views the mountain is yours to explore, naturally, #txiktxak style.

Mind the last departure!

To make sure you can return by TXIK TXAK bus after visiting La Rhune, please check the train’s timetable carefully.

  • Line 44 :
    From Monday to Friday, take the last uphill train to La Rhune at 3:30 p.m. (descent at 6:10 p.m.) to connect with line 44 at 6:30 p.m.
    On Saturday, take the uphill train at 2:10 p.m. (descent at 4:50 p.m.) to catch line 44 at 5:00 p.m..
  • Line 45 :
    From Monday to Saturday, the last uphill train is at 3:30 p.m. (descent at 6:10 p.m.) to connect with line 45 at 7:00 p.m.
    On Sunday, take the uphill train at 2:10 p.m. (descent at 4:50 p.m.) to connect with line 45 at 6:00 p.m..

Head for Iraty the wild heart of the Basque Country!

Welcome to the heart of one of Europe’s largest beech forests!

In Iraty, switch off from everyday life and set out on an adventure through mountains, forests and summer pastures, at over 1,300 m in altitude.

Accessible in high season, in July and August, without a car thanks to line  65  (Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port ↔ Iraty) or line (Mauléon Station ↔ Iraty Larrau).

Once you’re there, enjoy the facilities at the Chalets d’Iraty, nestled in the mountains and open all year round. Cosy accommodation, local produce and a wide range of seasonal activities await you:

  • Marked hiking trails through the forest
  • Walks or mountain biking routes
  • Wildlife watching (griffon vultures, deer, etc.)

The Tourism Office of the Basque Country Urban Community offers a selection of routes to help you discover the natural, cultural and historical treasures of our region. Easily accessible by public transport, these routes let you travel smart while exploring the area with total peace of mind.
